Speaking at BizCamp Guidelines

Are you thinking of talking at BizCamp AND? These Guidelines for Speaking will help you prepare better. Please remember that due to not wanting to duplicate topics and wanting to keep the talks at a high level, we will have a panel to decide on who will speak on the day.

How long should your talk last?

It needs to be no more than 20 minutes in length, plus an additional 10 minutes for discussion & Q&A.

What equipment will be available?

You can either bring your own laptop or bring your presentation along on a USB stick and use the laptop provided. There will be a data projector in each room.

What should you talk about?

Most importantly – This is not a space for sales pitches. People will vote with their feet if you start sprouting blatantly about your product or service and how great it is – that’s not what they have come to hear.

Otherwise, it’s completely up to you –

• What nuggets of business wisdom would you like to share?
• What shortcuts have you discovered on your business journey?
• How you got started/grew the business/sold the business could be interesting to others
• Perhaps you have very specific knowledge about an aspect of business you would like to share

Get creative, the range of potential topics is broad, but try to take an angle on something, make it snappy, intriguing, entertaining or valuable to the audience. Also the title of your talk should reflect the content.

What if someone else is talking about a similar topic?

Everyone has a different outlook on business experience and theory in practice, so it is unlikely that someone else will present exactly the same information. However, in order to keep the audience engaged, think of a unique angle, entertaining stance or fresh approach to the business topic you chose to talk about.

Remember that volunteer speaker slots will be allocated on relevance, with a view to getting a balance of topics across several business themes and that the organisers will have the final say on the schedule (themes samples; creativity, export/growth, start-up, finance, marketing, motivation & retail).
